What is English designed with Direct Method?
English designed with Direct Method is a complete English language course consisting of ten coursebooks. The series follows the CEFR levels: Books 1-2 cover A1, Books 3-4 cover A2, Books 5-6 cover B1, Books 7-9 cover B2 and Book 10 leads students towards C1 level.
Every book is divided into four modules and contains from 17 to 27 units. This clear progression helps language schools organise courses, plan lessons and monitor learners’ development over time. It also allows students to see their progress from one level to the next.
A typical coursebook includes around 100 pages of Direct Method material and approximately 40 pages of communication and grammar lessons. The programme therefore combines active oral practice with opportunities to understand, revise and apply English accurately.
How does the course teach vocabulary and speaking?
Each unit is based on a practical theme, which means that students learn vocabulary in meaningful contexts rather than from isolated lists. Topics reflect contemporary life and support communication in everyday, educational and professional situations.
Depending on the book, learners meet approximately 550 to 780 new words and practise them through 1,150 to 1,670 questions and answers. This question-and-answer format is central to the Direct Method: students listen, respond, repeat and gradually become faster and more confident when speaking English.
Vocabulary is deliberately recycled in subsequent books. Seeing and using familiar words again in new contexts supports long-term retention and helps students turn passive knowledge into active language they can use in conversation.
How is grammar presented?
The English designed with Direct Method 2022 edition uses a spiral approach to grammar. Instead of overloading students with too many new rules at once, grammar is introduced gradually, supported by clear examples and then revisited in later books.
This method gives learners time to understand grammatical structures and use them naturally in spoken answers. Regular revision also helps teachers reinforce earlier material and reduces the risk of learners forgetting important language points.
What online support is available?
Direct Language Lab coursebooks are supported by an online coursebook with vocabulary, translations, explanations, questions and answers. Students can also use downloadable MP3 audio files, online exercises, grammar practice, exams and placement tests on computers and smartphones. Schools need to use the DL PRO software to be able to connect these learning services in one accessible environment.
English designed with Direct Method is more than a printed course: it is a flexible English learning system for modern language schools, teachers and students.
